Granada was called Illibris by the Romans when they built a city here after colonising southern Spain. In the 8th century the Arabs, invaded the peninsula and gave it it’s current name of Granada. It was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492, at the hands of Queen Isabel of Castile and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon. Overlooked by the Sierra Nevada mountains in Andalucía, Granada renowned for it’s important examples of medieval architecture as a result of the Moorish occupation. Perhaps best known for the grand Alhambra, a hilltop fortress complex encompassing royal palaces, quiet patio areas, with reflecting pools as well as the fountains and orchards of the Generalife gardens.

Unusually, Granada tends to be much quieter during the holiday periods because students tend to go home to their towns and villages and many residents go to the beach. However, all Spanish cities have a vibrant nightlife and Granada is no exception.

The skiing centre of Sierra Navada is partly in the Granada Province and is a popular tourist destination. It includes the highest point of continental Spain, Mulhacén at 3,478 metres (11,411 ft) above sea level. Sierra Navada is one of Europe’s most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and sunshine.
